Cthulhu (2008)
August 13, 2008
It’s unfortunate that so few horror fans know of the great H.P. Lovecraft. Well before what we consider to be horror movies graced the screen, writer H.P. Lovecraft was weaving tales so wicked that you may even find yourself more uncomfortable at night after reading The Rats In The Walls than if you had watched SAW in bed. With such a twisted and deep world that Lovecraft has created, nothing has been more revered and more referenced then the unspeakable evil known only as Cthulhu.
The upcoming film Cthulhu is based heavily off of the literary work of Lovecraft, and follows the journey of a lowly Seattle history professor on his journey to the coast of Oregon. The professors has been feeling drawn back to his estranged family due to his need to execute his late mother’s estate. While the positive part of his trip has been catching up with his old childhood friend in a long awaited tryst, the professor unfortunately discovers that his father is involved in a New Age cult planning some very sinister and apocalyptic events in the not so distant future.
The Killing Gene (2008)
August 12, 2008
A missing pregnant woman’s body surfaces, but something is not right. Carved into her stomach are the symbols “W Delta Z”. The two cops in charge of this specific case pass the entire thing off as gang violence and nothing more under the assumption that carving a message into a dead body indicates that the victim isn’t the person who should be reading it. Further investigation leads them to discover that the women in question was actually knocked out by a rare compound. But as they bring this evidence up with their small towns only scientist in possession of that compound, they spot “W Delta Z” scrawled out on his office chalkboard. After evading capture for some time, the truth comes out: “W Delta Z” represents the selfish gene concept and those with it want to protect the people they love who share their DNA in some way, no matter the cost. Someone is using this to their advantage, pulling the strings of those with this gene and forcing them to commit some of the most gruesome torture porn style murders you could imagine.
This film is directed by Tom Shankland and stars Melissa George, Selma Blair, and Stellan Skarsgard
Midnight Meat Train (2008)
August 12, 2008
As a typical New York photographer, Leon’s (Bradley Cooper) goal has been to capture the essence of the city around him. Breaking through his lens and into the world around him, Leon helps protect a girl who he met on the subway from a group of hooligans harassing her. The mornings paper provides him with the unfortunate news that the same girl has gone missing. Delving into this mystery a little more than the average photographer would, Leon crosses paths with a quiet man in a business suit (Vinnie Jones) who has a passion for killing people on the late night train. The man enjoys stripping his victims naked and hangs them up just like a meat packing factory, proving just how cold and heartless a killer he really is. The adventure that Leon dives into in his attempt to stop the main in the suit has alienated his girlfriend (Leslie Bibb) and put distance between him and the investigating agent (Roger Bart). But it isn’t until the end of the movie that we find out exactly what the midnight meat train really is.
This film has only made it to about 100 screens total, most of them in second run theaters, so there isn’t high expectations that this movies audience will come from the theater. The possibilities will increase as we come closer to the DVD release.
Friday The 13th Remake Update
August 12, 2008
The return to Camp Crystal Lake is expected to hit theaters on February 13th, 2009, brining with it more gore, grotesque killing scenes, and of course sex. The remake of the film that first showed you the face of Jason Voorhees is being directed by Marcus Nispel, co-produced by Michael Bay and Brad Fuller, and written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. The cast includes stars such as Jared Padalecki, Aaron Yoo, Derek Mears, Amanda Righetti, Danielle Panabaker, Travis Van Winkle, Willa Ford, Nick Mennell, Jonathan Sadowski, and Odette Yustman.
The film has received some confusion in the past few months as many had speculated they would be aiming for more of a PG-13 rating, but Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller addressed this concern, explaining that “None of our remakes have been PG-13. How do you remake a rated R horror movie and take the guts out literally and figuratively? What is F13 without sex, drugs and really, really long sharp machete? And why would we, horror fans ourselves, produce a movie devoid of the things that made the title so appealing in the first place. So let me say for the record, that the F13 that we start shooting this Thursday is a full bodied, rated R film.”

But as Jack’s luck would have it, he has just awoken an ancient evil. As Professor Crowley slowly succums to the beating black heart buried deep inside his chest, his transformation into a gruesome beast is beginning to be much more visible.
Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)
August 8, 2008
The sequel to the classic vampire movie, the Lost Boys, follows siblings Chris (Tad Hilgenbrinck) and Nicole (Autumn Reeser) Emerson. Having lost both of their parents, the two move to Luna Bay to live with their Aunt. Chris, having once been a professional surfer, crosses paths with head vampire and surfer Shane (Angus Sutherland) who invites both of them to a party. It doesn’t take long for Shane to make his move on Nicole, offering her a taste of vampire blood. As Nicole’s transformation begins, Chris receives the help of none other than Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman). Together, the two pair up to take down the vampires and save Nicole.
It is very easy to see why fans of the original Lost Boys found themselves so disappointed in this sequel. While having the film directed by anyone other than Joel Schumacher spelled out as much trust in this film as its straight to DVD plans, hopes were high that P.J. Pesce’s (From Dusk Till Dawn 3) could possibly turn this around. The result is what seems like a complete copycat of the original with a slightly more updated world that these vampires live in.
Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
August 8, 2008
Over half the of the horror movies produced have been made with the hopes of becoming a cult classic. Unless the movie happens to be a big budget production, which even then we are starting to see attempts to make those movies more cult like (Grindhouse), many directors ruin their film striving for this goal. That’s not the case with Repo! The Genetic Opera. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, this symphony of terror plays perfectly off of the worlds interest in such demonic individuals as Sweeney Todd with his obsession for fresh meat pies. This is the story of a future where one can easily purchase replacement limbs, but those who do so on layaway will find that their organs won’t be removed so kindly if they can’t manage to keep up with their payments. The film has so far received an amazing response at the Fantasia film festival, making it fairly confusing as to why it will only see theaters in limited engagements under Lions Gate Films this November.
