Halloween DVD Release

October 16, 2008

Rob Zombie wrote and directed the 2007 remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher flick which will be hitting store shelves everywhere on October 21st in both DVD and Blu-ray formats. The movie features Malcolm McDowell in the Donald Pleasance role, along with Scout Taylor Compton taking the role formerly played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Of course, the story is the same. At age 10 Michael Myers murders several people in his home town of Haddonfield Illinois and as a result, he spends several years in a psychiatric institution. On a dark night, he escapes the institution and returns to his hometown where he goes on another killing spree. In contrast with the old film, the new film features more time spent developing Michael’s childhood than the old film.

No Man’s Land: Rise of Reeker

October 13, 2008

No Man’s Land: Rise of Reeker is essentially both a prequel and a sequel to last year’s indie flick, Reeker. Reeker debuted to hugely positive reviews, so it’s no doubt that Rise of Reeker would be equally as astounding and competent. In Rise of Reeker, you learn how Reekers are born, or rather, how they’re made. Once you discover that, the movie takes you to a small desert town. A trio of casino robbers are about to get into a huge gun fight with the law, and as a result, lots of death and destruction occur. The people of the town suddenly have to deal with not only the ghosts of those tragically murdered in the incident, but also the presence of the Reeker, who was attracted to the smell of the massacre.

Insanitarium

October 9, 2008

It’s hard to believe a film like Insanitarium was a direct to DVD release, when horrible remakes such as One Missed Call and Prom Night are dutifully distributed in theaters across the nation. This is one gem you shouldn’t miss, as the storyline will keep you guessing, and the whole idea of the movie will keep chills running down your spine. The story revolves around Jack, who’s parents are dead and his sister, Lilly is in a mental asylum after attempting suicide. The hospital won’t let Jack visit Lilly, so he decides to do the unthinkable and slashes his check with a knife, then proceeds to run around the neighborhood like a raving lunatic until the cops arrive and send him packing to the mental institution.

The Happening

October 7, 2008

M. Night Shyamalan used to be a great name for mixing horror and psychological thriller into something more. Plenty of people were, and still are, freaked out by The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. However, that’s about all M. Night Shyamalan has going for him these days. His latest attempt at a movie, The Happening, is certainly not something you’re going to want to watch a second time. The movie begins with strange deaths which defy any sort of reason, erupting all over major American cities. A high school teacher must find a way to escape the deadly phenomenon. What ensues is 1 hour and 25 minutes of utter crap. The only emotion in the movie is the contained within the fights between Elliot and his wife, and once the conclusion of the movie is on you, you’ll be left scratching your head going, “Really? That’s the end?”

Beetlejuice – 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

October 6, 2008

It’s really hard to believe that 20 years have passed since Beetlejuice grabbed my attention. It had all the twisted surrealistic nightmare dreams you’d imagine as a child, and even more considering its director, Tim Burton, packed the movie full of carnival freak show like qualities. Though the name of the movie implies it is solely about Beetlejuice, the story revolves around the Maitlands, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. The Maitlands find themselves in the recently deceased category after an accident involving a stray dog and a bridge. The ghosts return to their homes to live out 125 years on earth, only to discover the bliss of death is interrupted by the new home owners. The Maitlands discover the Deitzes are renovating their home and unable to cope with the new living conditions, the Maitlands enlist the help of Betelgeuse to rid them of the living.

The new DVD is the second release of the movie on DVD and being an “Anniversary Deluxe” edition, you’d think it would be packed with special features. You’d be wrong. The only thing that sets this release apart from the first is the inclusion of three episodes of the Beetlejuice animates series. You’ll be getting no documentary, no bonus footage, no outtakes, nothing, nada, zilch. Unless you enjoyed the Beetlejuice cartoon of the early 90s, you can probably skip this DVD if you already have the first in your collection.

100 Tears (2008)

August 18, 2008

Considered to be one of the most gore-filled shock movies of this year, 100 Tears has finally had some more light spread on it’s upcoming DVD release. After the film wowed fans at multiple film festivals and conventions, Anthem Pictures has finally agreed to pick up the film for a DVD distribution expected in late November or December of this year.

Director/FX creator Marcus Koch made it clear that this unrated version will be much different from what we’ve seen of this movie so far. They’ve added a few extra scenes and extended some of the major gore-filled moments of this film to give you exactly what your money is worth. Don’t forget, the film will also be full of special features, including a never before seen making-of featurette, along with interviews with the cast and crew, deleted scenes, outtakes, and more.

The Killing Gene (2008)

August 12, 2008

A missing pregnant woman’s body surfaces, but something is not right. Carved into her stomach are the symbols “W Delta Z”. The two cops in charge of this specific case pass the entire thing off as gang violence and nothing more under the assumption that carving a message into a dead body indicates that the victim isn’t the person who should be reading it. Further investigation leads them to discover that the women in question was actually knocked out by a rare compound. But as they bring this evidence up with their small towns only scientist in possession of that compound, they spot “W Delta Z” scrawled out on his office chalkboard. After evading capture for some time, the truth comes out: “W Delta Z” represents the selfish gene concept and those with it want to protect the people they love who share their DNA in some way, no matter the cost. Someone is using this to their advantage, pulling the strings of those with this gene and forcing them to commit some of the most gruesome torture porn style murders you could imagine.

This film is directed by Tom Shankland and stars Melissa George, Selma Blair, and Stellan Skarsgard

Dark Honeymoon (2007)

August 4, 2008

The idea of getting married may be terrifying enough for many people to consider that scenario in the horror genre, but the honeymoon is suppose to be where it all comes together and is proven to be worth it.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case in Dark Honeymoon.

After a short relationship, Paul (Nick Cornish) and Kathryn (Lindy Booth) decide that their relation is on the fast track to a committed life together. To put the solid stamp of approval on those feelings, the two tie the knot with their vows and head out for their honeymoon on the beautiful coast of Oregon.
