Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings review
For some reason even though Wrong Turn 3 was nothing short of a disaster Fox decided to try another shot at the franchise hiring back director Declan I’Brien in some type of Hail Mary move. However, this time around they decided to make a prequel given the fact that most of the inbred family has already been killed off in the original sequels which was actually an excellent idea since it meant that also returning are some of the best characters from the franchise such as ‘One Eye,’ ‘Three Finger,’ and ‘Saw Tooth.’
This definitely helped perk up Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings because while it is still not all that great of a horror film, it is definitely better than the last two films making it worth watching this time around and something that can stand alone for those who did not waste any time of the previous films. The film kicks off way in the past with a shot of the previously mentioned lead cannibals locked away in an insane asylum. Before too long we see them escape from prison, kill the staff, and release the rest of the inmates quickly setting the pace for the present day films.
Jump forward a few years and it is suddenly 2003 and the victims of Wrong Turn 4 are introduced which include a few couples and their friends who are attempting to snowmobile to a secluded cabin for the weekend when they make the inevitable wrong turn that leaves them lost. A snow storm quickly sets in and the group has no choice but to hide out at the closest building they find which happens to be the abandoned insane asylum from years before that now looks vacant even though the audience knows better.
One of the nice perks of Bloody 4 is that it at least appears to have had a larger budget to work with because the shots are much cleaner and even appear to be professional instead of just cheap thrills tossed together. The special effects and make-up are also much better with the gore resembling what you would imagine it would if the situations were actually real. This is one aspect in which Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings does not disappoint because if you enjoy blood and gore this film will not disappoint in the least with plenty of severed limbs and sliced heads to go around.
It would have been nice to have received a bit more of a back story on the cannibals since this was after all supposed to be a prelude to the other Wrong Turns, but instead the audience just has to suffer from the gore because outside of the escape not much light is shed on them at all. Character development is also kept at a minimum which is disappointing, but with so many people to kill off in such a short time period beggers cannot be choosers. Thus, those who enjoy gore will want to add it to their watch list, but those looking for a more sophisticated horror flick will still want to pass.
