La Horde, how the French do zombies
Everywhere you look this summer it seems that zombies are omni-present, at least if you are looking in the movie theatres. One of the latest flicks to come out of France is La Horde is another violent flick in which zombies are pretty much engaged in all out war with the living realm, which may be a little overdone but is certainly horrific to watch so in that way the film does hit is target.
The French are actually known for leaving viewers sleeping with the lights on for weeks and La Horde is no different as the movie is filled with very intense characters, violence that is enough to shock even veteran horror viewers, and of course plenty of zombies everywhere that you look.
The film is centered in Paris and follows four police officers who are corrupt and a group of malicious killers who apparently lack any sense of humanity. The four policemen attack the gang’s hideout near the city in order to get revenge for the death of a fellow police officer but quickly find that they are trapped, outgunned, and outnumbered. Before the worst can happen however, a crowd of violent zombies storms the hideout and suddenly everyone is fighting for their life on both sides of the law.
What makes La Horde redeemable is that in the face of the graphic violence there are some real characters with intense dialogue that is not normally seen in a horror film. The anti-hero gleam of the film is also unique and uncliched for the genre of movies making it an enjoyable experience outside of the pure hero and the absence of heroes and token players is also a fresh experience. In fact, the only true plot of the film is survival with the tough making it out alive.
