Dance of the Dead Released

October 16, 2008

The film was originally shown at London’s Frightfest, but Ghost House Underground will be releasing a DVD version for your fans who want to sink your teeth into it. The movie is basically comedic teen oriented horror which attempts to pull off a zombie comedy hybrid. The storyline is pretty cookie cutter, a power plant causes a zombie outbreak and only the geeks in town can save the town. The redeeming quality of the movie is the script and nicely acted characters, not to mention a whole batch of fine performances from the actors who are actually the age which they are playing. You’ve got your goofball hero and his sidekicks saving the day, which is little more than you could expect from this indie film.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer

October 16, 2008

There have been a lot of horror movie homages over the past few years, from Hatchet to Behind the Mask. These films mainly relish in winking at the audience in regards to their past horror movie references and trivia. It’s pretty rare when these films actually rise to transcend their self-referential genre and become one of the great films which they are emulating.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer pays homage to all the old school monster flicks and Evil Dead style demonic possessions. The difference between Jack Brooks and the other types of tribute films is that Jack Brooks actually stands on it’s own two feet as a bad ass movie which packs horror and comedy into the same punch. The storyline is pretty simple. Small town plumber Jack Brooks has some anger management problems. He’s seeing a shrink, but the sessions don’t seem to be helping him much. When he was a young boy, he saw his whole family ripped apart by a creature. Since the event, he has always blamed himself and just hasn’t been the same. Jack Brooks is enrolled in a night time biology class with his girlfriend Eve, but only because she insisted on it. Eventually, Jack helps his professor with some plumbing problems the professor has been having at an old house the professor has been renovating.

Tony Todd Talks Candyman Rumors

October 16, 2008

In a market that has been over saturated with remakes, sequels and prequels, it’s not surprising to hear news is floating around about a new Candyman movie, since the last film was released on VHS about 10 years ago. A remake has been in the talks for quite some time now, but it recently received more light with a theory revolving around Sony wanting to make the Candyman a white man, as insane an idea as that would be.

Jigsaw Will Call Your Friends & Family

October 16, 2008

In preparation for the theater release of Saw V, Lionsgate has provided its fans with the means to scare everyone they know silly. At the website saw5.varitalk.com, you can have Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) send a message either via phone or e-mail. The gimmick has been used before, most recently with New Line Cinema’s Snakes on a Plane. However, this is just a bit more scary, considering Jigsaw actually says both your friend’s name, as well as yours. The message he relays is quite freaky, but keep in mind there are certain times of day the system will deliver the message. If you’re hoping to give your friend a huge scare in the middle of the night, you’re out of luck. The system will refuse to send the mail until day light. Nevertheless, if the tool remains up until the movies release, I can see a few people having fun with this after watching the premiere.

Prey For the Beast

October 13, 2008

Now days, you don’t see many horror flicks with monsters parading around in rubber suits in attempt to scare you. It just doesn’t stand to reason to use this method, with all the CGI and special effects available which, when combined, can give a person more of a cheap scare than rubber and latex ever thought about doing. This micro budget monster movie revolves around a rubber suited monster which massacres unsuspecting people who’ve dared to venture into its domain. The movie seeks to trek backwards in time in the 50s and 60s era of movies in which rubber suited monsters were believable. It does pulls the whole thing off.. with mediocre flair.

As it stands, a not so believable rubber suit will always trump a poorly choreographed CGI creature or scene, because the suit is real. Even though it’s not 100% realistic, it’s okay, because we’re speaking about a B-monster movie. Of course, you’re more than likely to chuckle at the sight of the rubber monster, rather than be afraid of it.

Road to Hell

October 13, 2008

Road to Hell is Albert Pyun’s unofficial sequel to the 1984 fable Streets of Fire. The whole project is quite ambitious, as it hits more often than it misses, but it does suffer from a few technical issues. The whole movie is shot entirely on a green screen, and Pyun has considered scrapping some of the project in order to go with a more Sin City black & white feel. Since there is no final version, we’re setting tech stuff aside to focus on the storyline that will be offered in Road to Hell.

Michael ParĂ© and Deborah Van Valkenburgh will be reprising their roles from the original film, as Cody and his sister, which provides the link between the films. Road to Hell opens with her giving a brief summary of events which has brought her mercenary brother to the point of madness, which is where the story starts. Cody has a single mission, which is to find Ellen, in hopes she can be his salvation. Cody soon finds he’s not alone in Edge City, where people who’ve blurred the line between dark and light go to have their soul reborn.

No Man’s Land: Rise of Reeker

October 13, 2008

No Man’s Land: Rise of Reeker is essentially both a prequel and a sequel to last year’s indie flick, Reeker. Reeker debuted to hugely positive reviews, so it’s no doubt that Rise of Reeker would be equally as astounding and competent. In Rise of Reeker, you learn how Reekers are born, or rather, how they’re made. Once you discover that, the movie takes you to a small desert town. A trio of casino robbers are about to get into a huge gun fight with the law, and as a result, lots of death and destruction occur. The people of the town suddenly have to deal with not only the ghosts of those tragically murdered in the incident, but also the presence of the Reeker, who was attracted to the smell of the massacre.

New Authorized Dracula Sequel In the Works

October 10, 2008

Bram Stoker’s great grandnephew, Dacre Stoker has sold the rights to the sequel of Bram’s classic novel to an alliance of publishers, including Dutton US, Harper UK, and Penguin-Canada. The new novel will appear in October 09. The writers were able to access Stoker’s original hand written notes for thenovel , which is to be called “The Undead”. Perhaps the most exciting news about this deal is that horror movie fans will be seeing a sequel as well.

In order to coincide with the release of the novel, a feature film will be made. While there isn’t much news concerning directors or actors, a small tidbit has been released concerning the plot. The story takes place in London, in 1912. Someone is stalking the band of adventurers who defeated the vampire Dracula almost 25 years ago. It will be interesting to see how this pans out, especially since the movie will be adapted from Stoker’s hand written notes. You can expect to hear more information on this deal in the coming months, as a studio is chosen and directors and actors are signed to the project. Dracula fans should be very excited about the potential this film/novel deal offers.
