O’Brien Flushes Rocky Horror Rumors

When the news hit that the world would be receiving a remake of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the response was a bit mixed to say the least. Considering that the film is being ushered into remake by the likes of MTV, Fox TV, and Sky Movies, it was easy to see why some were skeptical about it. But one major factor seemed to keep fans hopeful that this redoing wouldn’t completely ruin what they had grown to love: Richard O’Brien (writer, lyricist, and co-star as Riff Raff) would be involved.
Unfortunately, that information couldn’t be further from the truth.
In a recent interview with the BBC, O’Brien stated “I’m not co-producing it and I won’t be involved in any way. The first I heard about it was when people sent me cuttings from U.S. papers.”. When asked about his opinion on the film itself, he also mentioned that he has “no view on whether it should be remade, but it doesn’t have my blessing.”.
What appeared to irk O’Brien the most was that he “heard that they’re going to put new songs in. I wrote the book, the music and the lyrics. Where are they going to get the songs from? Who’s going to do that? That’s a bit strange, isn’t it?”
As of now, the film slated for a Halloween 2009 release date has no cast or director.
